Social Media breaks the news: Osama Bin Laden is Dead!
Internet has come a long way. Remember those days when it was exclusively for US Military use. I bet most of us never new about internet let alone what it could do for a simple end user.
Enter social network websites such as twitter.com, facebook.com and the rest. Offcourse all riding on the internet. Twitter has been singled out as one of the first sources of information about US military action agains Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
Osama bin Laden's death came after months of tracking his courier to and from his posh residence, a few kilometers from Islamabad. One of the first few tweets reportedly from near Osama's residence went as follows: "Helicopter hovering above Abbottabad at 1AM (is a rare event)". Others were more specific like "So I'm told by a reputable person they have killed Osama Bin Laden. Hot damn." .
News of bin Laden's death continued to spread like wildfire especially on Twitter. One of the interesting early tweets were like: "The few people online at this time of the night are saying one of the copters was not Pakistani".
